POET Technologies Releases Breakthrough Photonics Products Powering AI Innovation

ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania, United States, 30th Apr 2024 – POET Technologies has announced more module product development for the AI hardware and datacom markets based on the first-of-its-kind POET Optical Interposer™. The silicon photonics optical modules are advanced transmit and receive devices (or “transceivers”) for data transmission using light, or photonics. Light carries more data, at a faster speed, lower power and with less heat generation compared to electrons through copper. Photonics products are essential for AI companies who need a boost in data speed in order to create the next generation of computer architecture and software development as artificial-intelligence usage continues to explode.

With AI models doubling in size every four months, the current on-chip products cannot keep up with the demand for more memory and power efficiency. Optical interconnects solve the data movement bottleneck. AI service providers are furiously building out specialized data centers with 800G transceivers to handle the speed and bandwidth requirements.

POET aligns with where the industry is today and where it is going. While many companies are deploying 800G products, POET is one of the very few industry leaders with a viable means to get from 800G to 1.6T data speed, and can do so by providing cost savings and improved power efficiency. POET’s 200G/lane transmitter and receiver optical engines are the fundamental building blocks for enabling pluggable transceivers at 1.6T and 3.2T data rates. 

POET Wavelight™ is an 800G 2xFR4 OSFP pluggable transceiver that marks the company’s entry into the module market. Wavelight is at the leading edge of module designs, with speed and performance that is highly sought after by AI network operators such as Google, Meta, Nvidia, and AWS. 

POET Starlight™ is an 8-channel packaged light source for C-Band and O-Band wavelengths for chip-to-chip AI applications and co-packaged optics for the data center market. Starlight can be integrated on a host board and connected to chips and ASICs with built-in silicon photonics. It is ready for scalable manufacturing using individually mounted lasers rather than expensive laser arrays, driving lower cost. Its notable features include expandability to 16 channels and above and the ability to incorporate optical splitters and combiners on the chip. 

The key to these products is POET’s breakthrough optical interposer platform, which removes electrical connections at the microchip level and instead utilizes laser light. This photonic integration allows POET to make the Internet faster and equip AI developers with the tools to build next-generation applications across a range of devices and products. POET’s optical interposer combines photonics and electronics passively in a single integrated package, providing the seamless interface necessary for the two technologies to efficiently work together.
