Student-Led Nonprofit 504 Found Announces Nationwide Expansion to Boost Neurodiversity Support

504 Found, the youth-driven nonprofit that revolutionizes support for neurodiverse students in rural America, today announced a nationwide expansion to address the opportunity gap faced by students with disabilities. With plans to open branches in Florida, California, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, the organization seeks to replicate its successful model and empower neurodiverse students across the country.

Led by Founder and Executive Director Khandaker Wasi (Poolesville High School), alongside Chief Operating Officer Ahwanith Islam (Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology), 504 Found tackles a stark reality: according to the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), students with disabilities are twice as likely to drop out of high school compared to their neurotypical peers. To combat this, 504 Found focuses on two crucial areas: increasing registration for federal 504 plans to provide essential academic and personal support, and enhancing the effectiveness of these plans for students in underserved communities.

Proven Success in Rural Communities: A Model for Expansion

504 Found’s impact in rural areas is undeniable. “We’re committed to closing the opportunity gap for neurodiverse students across America. This expansion marks a major step towards that goal.” Says Khandaker Wasi, Founder & Executive Director. 504 Found’s personalized approach includes free 1-on-1 consultations, peer evaluations, and tailored study plans designed to cater to individual needs. The organization’s emphasis on fostering community is seen through its successful ‘buddy system,’ where students with neurodiverse traits are paired with supportive mentors. Additionally, 504 Found’s initiatives like the A+DHD + A+HLETES program celebrate the achievements of student-athletes with 504 plans, directly challenging stereotypes and inspiring a shift in perspectives. “Personalized support and a sense of community are essential for neurodiverse students to thrive. Through our expansion, we aim to bring these resources to every corner of the country.” Says Ahwanith Islam.

“We’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of proper support on neurodiverse students in our communities,” says Wasi. “This expansion is about scaling that impact, offering the same life-changing opportunities to students across the nation who may otherwise have been left behind.”

Digital Community and National Impact

504 Found’s robust online presence is a cornerstone of their success. Their Discord community, boasting over 18,000 registered members, serves as a lifeline for students—offering crucial resources, support, and a sense of belonging. This digital platform has been particularly impactful in areas where access to specialized in-person services may be limited. The organization was fiscally sponsored and supported by Hack+ which has provided them with over $70,000 in resources and funding.

“Our digital reach has broken down barriers for neurodiverse students nationwide,” adds Islam. “The nationwide expansion will amplify this impact even further, ensuring that no student falls through the cracks due to their location or neurodiversity.”

Success Stories: The Power of Personalized Support

504 Found’s work is reflected in the individual achievements of students they support:

●  Improved Outcomes: A student with ADHD enrolled in their 1-on-1 consulting and schedule development program saw significant improvements in grades, organization, and overall well-being.

●  Buddy System Builds Community: Through their peer-to-peer ‘buddy system,’ a student who often felt isolated found a supportive friend, academic help, and a safe space for open communication.

●  A+DHD + A+HLETES Changes Narratives: A student-athlete with ADHD, featured in this initiative, shared how their 504 plan and involvement in the program helped them develop time management skills that improved their performance both in the classroom and on the field.
