Aziz Guergachi – A Day In the Life of an Interdisciplinary Researcher

When individuals acquire new information, they subconsciously integrate it with previous concepts and experiences by relating the latest information to something already known, allowing them to see a bigger picture. According to Mr. Aziz Guergachi, interdisciplinary research is the way forward.

Aziz Guergachi has authored several innovative publications and made considerable progress on several academic topics. His work has elevated him to the forefront of numerous international forums, and he is now considered one of the foremost researchers in his  area. Guergachi’s narrative is a collection of successful consequences from thinking outside the box. His distinct multitasking research strategy has solidified his contribution to his career. His main scientific contributions include digital health and well-being, the manufacturing industry and national strategy to safeguard it, the movement of wealth and its impact on society’s resilience, and global environmental system management.

Guergachi has long advocated for multidisciplinary problem-solving. So, he opted to study various academic subjects to understand the challenges at hand better and attempt to find the most effective ways to deal with the complexities. He did this to perceive issues and challenges as holistically as possible. He was initially criticized for attempting to investigate a variety of scientific subjects simultaneously. Some individuals believed that he was overextending himself and that his work would suffer. Others just wondered what he was doing and why he was doing it.

However, Guergachi has successfully juggled multiple research projects in different disciplines and has made substantial progress on all of them. Some have stated that his most remarkable qualities are his multitasking capacity and natural tendency to marshal arguments from different subjects. As a result, his work is often more innovative than it would be if he focused on a single domain. He discovered that Interdisciplinary research, while very challenging to conduct, is an effective method for identifying robust and long-lasting solutions to real-world problems.

Guergachi feels that we have reached a point in our civilization when specialization must be accompanied by deep collaboration among multidisciplinary professionals for our societies to advance to the next level. We have been restricted in a linear path for too long, bound to our areas of expertise, unaware that our work will eventually affect and be affected by others. For example, if we knew the problems industrialization and fossil fuels pose to nature, we would have opted for a sustainable energy source beforehand. In this respect, Guergachi argues that the most pressing existential threat to modern society is not climate change but rather the current mindset and approaches we tend to adopt to tackle challenges. We have this tendency to develop expertise in a particular area, then entrench ourselves in this area and enjoy the comfort of knowing (almost) everything about that area. Such an approach to Science has worked well during the decades that followed the Renaissance period. Still, now that most burning questions keep emerging at the boundaries among disciplines, it has become detrimental to human progress.

Interdisciplinary Research makes this easier because you can build around a topic and explore it from various aspects, like building up a hill instead of a ladder. The advantage of a mountain is that it makes it easier to climb in terms of knowledge and disseminate that knowledge over various interconnected domains. It’s possible to see the advantages of interdisciplinary learning if you apply this strategy to different disciplines.

Aziz Guergachi’s research agenda holistically addresses the dilemmas underlying the profit-people-planet triple-bottom accounting framework. In contrast, most academics focus on one specified discipline and one topic, restricting the big picture. Guergachi’s approach of incorporating numerous fields and research areas to produce a conclusion that considers as many components as possible allows him to see things from a broader perspective. Many challenges, including but not limited to climate change,   industrial waste, poverty, urban sprawl, mental illness, and so on, can be seamlessly addressed to some extent if researchers focus on interdisciplinary research.
