reTHink’s Zero-Waste Store Leads the Way in Community Sustainability and Plastic-Free Living
While global efforts to combat plastic pollution often fall short, and world leaders struggle to agree on solutions, a small-town nonprofit is leading by example. reTHink’s Zero-Waste Store, launched during the pandemic, is revolutionizing sustainable living. By offering all-natural, plastic-free products in eco-friendly packaging, it empowers local communities to reduce their reliance on plastic and embrace a greener future.
Terre Haute, Indiana, United States, 7th Jan 2025 – Amid the vibrant community of Terre Haute, Indiana, reTHink, Inc. is making waves in sustainability with its Zero-Waste Store. This innovative shop offers household and skincare products free of plastic packaging and crafted with safe, natural ingredients. Established in 2020 during the pandemic, it stands as a key pillar of reTHink’s mission to fight environmental pollution and empower communities to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
“Our Zero-Waste Store is more than a place to shop,” said Dr. Shikha Bhattacharyya, Founder and Executive Director of reTHink. “It’s a resource, a community hub, and a catalyst for change, helping individuals reduce plastic dependency and embrace a healthier lifestyle.”
Eliminating Plastic Pollution by Linking Sustainability to Everyday Choices
All our everyday essentials such as shampoos, conditioners, laundry products, kitchen cleaners come in plastic packaging. Unfortunately, much of this plastic isn’t recyclable, contributing to environmental pollution and an unsustainable waste cycle. Reducing single-use plastics is a key objective for reTHink’s Zero-Waste Store. Products like shampoo bars and compostable packaging alternatives replace wasteful items that often end up polluting the environment.
At reTHink, customers can find everyday essentials that either come without packaging (Naked Soaps and shampoo bars) or packaged in minimal and compostable packaging.
Additionally, a lot of commercial products are made with ingredients harmful to human health and the natural environment. At reTHink, products only with all natural safe ingredients are allowed. Some items, like shampoo bars and tooth powder, are even made on-site, reinforcing the importance of local production.
For many, adopting sustainable habits can seem daunting. Dr. Bhattacharyya explained, “We simplify the process by offering convenient, eco-friendly alternatives that eliminate waste at the source. This isn’t just about selling products; it’s about inspiring action and empowering change.”
From reusable household items to natural personal care products, reTHink makes it easier than ever for residents to embrace greener choices and reduce their environmental footprint by making better everyday choices.
Education and Engagement
The Zero-Waste Store doubles as a venue for sustainability workshops, demonstrations, and community events. Residents can learn practical waste reduction strategies, from composting to making sustainable household products. These efforts bridge the gap between awareness and action, equipping participants with the tools they need to live more sustainably.
“reTHink HQ with a community garden, a Zero-Waste Store, and a plastic up-cycling workspace is a space for learning and collaboration,” said Dr. Bhattacharyya. “Through workshops and hands-on activities, we’re building a community that supports each other in making impactful changes.”
Supporting Local Artisans and creating a circular economy
In addition to its environmental mission, the Zero-Waste Store prioritizes local partnerships. By sourcing products from nearby makers and artisans, the store reduces carbon emissions from shipping and bolsters the local economy.
“Collaboration is essential,” Dr. Bhattacharyya emphasized. “We’re proving that sustainability supports not only the environment but also the community’s economic health.”
Tackling Health Hazards of Indoor Pollution
According to studies, about half the pollution arises inside our houses from the products we use in daily life. Essentials such as toothpaste, shampoo, cleaners, detergents, and skin care products are not only packaged in plastic, but are also filled with toxic chemicals that are polluting our indoor air quality and health. Signature items like refillable soap dispensers, fabric produce bags, and natural laundry detergent help customers transition to a zero-waste lifestyle while addressing indoor and outdoor pollution.
“Every reusable product purchased is a step toward a cleaner planet,” said Dr. Bhattacharyya.
Building a Model for Community Sustainability
The Zero-Waste Store is part of a broader vision for reTHink, which combines retail with education, community programs, and local partnerships. By integrating these elements, reTHink has created a replicable model for advancing sustainability at the local level.
“Our work in Terre Haute is an example of what’s possible,” said Dr. Bhattacharyya. “We hope other communities are inspired to adopt similar approaches to environmental responsibility.”
Looking ahead, reTHink aims to expand its partnerships with local producers, increase educational opportunities, and continue advocating for accessible sustainable living.
