Many hundreds of patients have walked through the doors of the Spero Clinic in Arkansas – often crippled by debilitating chronic pain. Many suffered symptoms including lack of movement, inability to walk, and a host of other issues. More than 90% of those patients walked out of Spero’s door in full remission or completely healed after having gone through intensive treatment. Their stories are often heartbreaking, but with Spero’s unique treatments, they ended in a new chance in life.
While the COVID pandemic has taken a brutal toll on millions, a significant percentage of people have continued to experience extreme, persistent, and recurring symptoms for weeks or even months after clearing the infection. This condition is commonly referred to as “Post-COVID Syndrome or “Long COVID,” and has baffled the medical community for quite some time.
Long COVID has emerged as a significant concern, with millions of people worldwide facing ongoing, debilitating symptoms that are disrupting their lives. According to the CDC, “6.9% of adults and 1.3% of children (roughly 17 million and 1 million, respectively) in the United States ever reported experiencing Long COVID.”
Long COVID most often occurs in people who had severe COVID-19 illness, but it is not restricted to those who were critically ill or hospitalized. People with mild symptoms and even those who did not develop symptoms can also be affected. In fact, most people with Long COVID had mild COVID-19, and both adults and children can be affected.
Dylan’s Ordeal
Such was the case with the Smith family in Easton, Maryland. Their 14-year-old son, Dylan, has battled severe Long COVID for more than two years. Even worse, neither mom Stacey nor dad Mike Smith had any idea what was causing Dylan’s condition.
“He was hardworking, he was athletic, he was caring. He was just such a loving and funny, funny kid,” Stacey Smith said. “He had lots of friends. He was a straight-A student, no underlying health issues.”
Dylan contracted COVID-19 in January of 2022, one week after his mother was infected. Both recovered, but Dylan’s ordeal had only just begun. Dylan’s symptoms quickly progressed from chronic fatigue, body aches, and migraines, to even seizures before he was finally diagnosed with Long COVID. Once the pain had set in, Dylan took his last independent steps in June 2022.
The Smiths sought medical help and were referred to several doctors and clinics, but nothing worked – Dylan’s symptoms and pain didn’t go away. Says Mike Smith, “Once the pain set in, it was very alarming because you couldn’t even sleep at night, and we would go to the emergency room in the middle of the night to try to seek relief for his pain.”
Finally, Dylan seemed to improve thanks to a new medication; however, the improvement didn’t last. He contracted COVID-19 again in February 2024 and became bedridden with a feeding tube.
Finally Hope
In their desperate search for a treatment that would give results, Mike and Stacy Smith found the Spero Clinic in Fayetteville, Arkansas—a unique and successful treatment for pediatric Long COVID.
“They’re treating Long COVID as a neurological disease where they’re healing the body from the inside out.” Says Stacy Smith. “It’s finally giving us hope that our child can get his life back.”
Already three months after receiving treatment at the Spero Clinic, Dylan’s progress was remarkable. “I can move all of my body. I have the feeding tube out. I can talk, I can speak fully. Nerve pain is down to a zero when it was at a 10,” Dylan said. Now, Dylan is fully healed, healthy, and active again.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it? It’s a miracle, it’s a miracle,” added Stacey Smith.
Dylan has a message for other teens who are suffering from Long COVID and are in the depths of despair he knows so well: “I want to give the message that there is hope and that at least I know there is a place that can help you, that there is a life to be lived and this isn’t going to be the life that you live for the rest of your days.”
“It’s been amazing, it really has,” Stacey Smith said. “We have our son back.”
A New Chance
Through its unique Long COVID treatment program, The Spero Clinic aims to help those most affected by this condition – primarily seniors and children – by giving them a new chance in life.
Says Dr. Katinka van der Merwe, Founder and CEO of the Spero Clinic, “Long COVID symptoms are temporary and can be reversed with The Spero Clinic’s Long COVID treatment program. I have made it my life’s mission to treat patients who suffer from so-called ‘impossible’ diseases – those that have been given up by the medical community.”
“I can help them” she continued, “by treating them with non-invasive, holistic therapies that all aim to heal the issues occurring in your central nervous system. Our Long COVID Treatment Program is based on holistic principles to allow the body to heal itself.”
