FROM TROUBLED YOUTH TO NATIONAL RECOGNITION: CEO DERRICK HAYES’ PHILANTHROPIC WORK RENAMES SCHOOL-BASED RESOURCE CENTER
Formerly known as the Carver Hub, the newly-named Derrick Hayes Hub is a testament to the founder of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks’ commitment to giving back
United States, 12th Apr 2023 – COR, a nonprofit organization committed to unlocking the potential of underserved, trauma-impacted students, is proud to announce that the Carver Hub, a school-based resource center for students, will be renamed the Derrick Hayes Hub in honor of Derrick Hayes, the founder of Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks and a renowned philanthropist.
Derrick Hayes, a West Philadelphia native, understands the value of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. As a young man, he found himself in trouble with the law and was given an unexpected second chance. He vowed to give back to his community while building a business that would bring Atlanta a taste of his Philly roots. Today, he is a self-made entrepreneur, restaurateur, and philanthropist who has been nationally recognized by Forbes, Good Morning America, Black Enterprise, and more.
Hayes recently appeared on The Tamron Hall Show where he donated a check for $20,000 to the HUB. The Carver Hub is a safe space for de-escalation and early intervention programming, as well as student interest groups, and a hangout and study spot for after-school activities. It is where students go to get peace, tutoring, mental health help, and a safe space to go after school because of the violence in their neighborhoods. The HUB was created by COR after six Carver High School students were murdered over the years.
“I am deeply honored that COR has chosen to rename the Carver Hub after me,” said Derrick Hayes. “Growing up in an underserved community, I understand the importance of having a safe space to go to. The HUB is doing incredible work to keep these students safe and provide them with the resources they need to succeed. I am humbled to be a part of this initiative and look forward to continuing to support the HUB and the students it serves.”
The dedication ceremony for the renaming of the Derrick Hayes Hub will take place at Carver High School on Friday, April 14th, at 1 pm. In addition to the renaming, Hayes will mentor budding young students who have aspirations of becoming entrepreneurs and continue to help the school and the HUB maintain a safe space.
Hayes’ commitment to the community extends beyond the renaming of the HUB. He established the David & Derrick Hayes Foundation in honor of his father to support early detection and cancer research, the David & Derrick Hayes College Fund that provides quarterly funding to deserving students with a 3.0 GPA or higher, and Square 1: The Life Experience – a program Derrick founded with his fiancé Pinky Cole to provide 25,000 Black men across the nation with full access and awareness to life insurance to support their health and generate generational wealth within the black community.
COR is thrilled to honor Derrick Hayes for his dedication to the community and for his commitment to giving back. The renaming of the HUB is a testament to his hard work and generosity.
