Human Trafficking Under the Spotlight: Scientology’s International Campaign

Modern Slavery Human Trafficking

In its efforts to uphold rights worldwide the Church of Scientology plays a significant role in the fight, against human trafficking by raising awareness through campaigns and educational programs and collaborating internationally. Scientologists are actively involved in preventing exploitation and aiding survivors by advocating for the values outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as well as partnering with organizations that address trafficking from its core. The commitment to this cause was showcased during a town hall event at the Church of Scientology in Seattle where both local and global professionals discussed the importance of education and laws in combating human trafficking while supporting those at risk.

Modern Slavery Human Trafficking

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Combat Trafficking

The Church of Scientology in Seattle recently hosted a community event addressing trafficking, with a focus on child sex trafficking in Washington state. The gathering coincided with UN International Human Rights Day and followed the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” Notable speakers shared insights and rallied for immediate action to fight this widespread problem.

Butch Yarnell, Eastern Washington & Idaho Regional Coordinator for Shared Hope International, delivered the keynote address. He explained Shared Hope International’s mission to combat sex trafficking through prevention and intervention. Yarnell highlighted the extent of trafficking in Washington and stressed the need for legislative support to disrupt trafficking operations and assist survivors.

In 2024, Washington state passed Senate Bill 6006. This legislation empowers survivors by providing civil protection orders and victim compensation without time limits. It also removes the statute of limitations for prosecuting sex trafficking cases. Yarnell emphasized that Seattle serves as a hub in a trafficking network extending to Honolulu and Canada, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance and support.

Youth Education as Prevention

Dave Scattergood from Youth for Human Rights presented educational materials aimed at teaching young people about their essential human rights. These resources, inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), include brochures, videos, and a free online program accessible worldwide.

Scattergood stressed, “Educating youth about their basic human rights is vital to prevent them from becoming victims of human trafficking.”

European Perspectives

EUROSTAT published 2022 statistics on trafficking in human beings on 24 January 2024. The data showed 10,093 registered victims, a 41% increase compared to 2021. However, only 2,097 convicted traffickers in the EU, reflecting a 16.7% decrease. This highlights the ongoing challenges in prosecuting traffickers effectively.

Ivan Arjona, Scientology representative to the European Union and the UN, urged authorities and civil society to adopt a unified strategy against human trafficking in Europe. He emphasized international partnerships, extensive education programs, and strict legal enforcement. Arjona recommended boosting funding for community outreach and empowering civil society organizations to educate youth in high-risk areas.

A Global Crisis With Local Impact

The International Labor Organization estimates 27.6 million people are trapped in forced labor worldwide, generating $236 billion annually in illegal profits. In Washington state alone, the National Human Trafficking Hotline identified 202 cases involving 367 victims in 2024. These figures illustrate the urgent need for action on both local and global levels.

The Church of Scientology’s dedication to human rights, inspired by founder L. Ronald Hubbard‘s, drives its community engagement and educational initiatives. Programs like United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights operate chapters worldwide. The original series Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network  documents the programs’ results.

The Seattle forum reflects the importance of collective action to combat trafficking. Legislative advocacy, education, and community engagement are all critical. Collaboration among governments, NGOs, and civil society is essential. As Ivan Arjona concluded, “Only through awareness, action, and accountability can we turn the tide against this modern-day slavery.”
