Oleg Maltsev: The Local and Global Impacts of the War in Ukraine Conference is a Timely and Significant Event

Munich, Germany, 29th Jun 2024, King NewsWireThe Conference “Local and Global Impacts of the War in Ukraine” which was held in Prague on June 6-7, 2024, welcomed 30 participants from 10 different countries, including distant locations such as the USA and Australia. The conference focused on highlighting the significant changes the world experienced due to the war and aimed to share this enriched knowledge with a wider audience, thus strengthening the understanding of the war’s consequences in both local and global contexts.

The conference was organized by the Institute of Sociological Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University, the Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences , and the European Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

During the conference, experts presented in-depth research and analysis on various aspects of the war’s impact, including economic, political, and social ramifications. Keynote speakers offered valuable insights into the current state of affairs and future projections, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

The conference covered critical topics such as War, Security, Geopolitical Challenges, Migration, Minorities, and Everyday Life of Ukrainian refugees. Discussions provided a nuanced perspective on complex war-related issues, including the subject of Unequal Citizenship and Transnational Mobilisation of Polish, Czech, and Ukrainian Roma during the event.

Reflecting on the multifaceted discussions during the conference, Prof. Jerome Krase, EUASU President and Conference Committee member, stated, “The whole world has changed because of the invasion of Ukraine. For instance, it has caused the largest mass migration since World War II, at least in Europe. The conference also delved into numerous other critical aspects, offering a comprehensive exploration of the war’s impact on global dynamics.”

Dr. Oleg Maltsev, EUASU Presidium member, Academician and Conference Committee member,  noted that the war in Ukraine lead to an unprecedented geopolitical threat to the entire world. This situation demands thorough study, which Maltsev has initiated and will present in one of his upcoming books.

Conference Committee member Dr. Zdeněk Uherek, a Charles University Prague Faculty Member in Social Sciences, concluded the conference by expressing gratitude to all attendees, especially recognizing Ukrainian scholars who participated remotely from war zones without electricity, showcasing their resilience in contributing to the event.

The conference marked the beginning of important discussions, highlighting critical issues that demand further research. It underscored the need for ongoing collaboration and in-depth studies to address the complex social, economic, and political challenges arising from the conflict in Ukraine. The event successfully set the stage for future scholarly endeavors and emphasized the importance of integrating Ukrainian social scientists into the global academic community. Recordings of the presentations will be available in coming months on Youtube Channel of EUASU. The conference’s Collected Papers volume will be published between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.
