Pie Tax Reports Surpassing 100,000 App Downloads as Making Tax Digital Begins Rollout
Pie Tax reports that its tax management application surpassed 100,000 downloads earlier this year as the UK’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) reforms for Income Tax entered their next phase of rollout in April 2026.
Pie Tax said the milestone was reached prior to the latest phase of the MTD rollout, with continued user growth reflecting increasing demand for digital tax management tools as the reforms came into effect. The April 2026 phase of MTD requires self-employed individuals and landlords with annual self-employment or property income above £50,000 to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC, followed by an end-of-year declaration. The threshold is scheduled to reduce to £30,000 in April 2027 under the published timetable for the reform.
Company reporting places the 100,000-download milestone in the context of a broader shift toward digital tax administration. The introduction of quarterly updates, alongside the continued requirement to submit an annual declaration, increases the frequency of tax-related administration for affected taxpayers and reinforces the need for software that supports year-round record keeping and tax calculations. Pie Tax noted that real-time tax calculations, digital record keeping and guided tax filing were features used by app users to manage reporting more effectively throughout the tax year.
Tommy McNally, Founder of Pie, said:
“We’re seeing a major shift in how people manage their taxes. Historically, many taxpayers only thought about tax once a year, but Making Tax Digital is forcing people to keep accurate records year-round. The fact that we’ve now surpassed 100,000 downloads suggests taxpayers are actively looking for easier ways to stay compliant and understand their tax position before deadlines arrive.”
Pie Tax described its user base as composed of a mix of sole traders, micro-business owners, landlords with one or more properties and individuals operating multiple revenue streams such as online selling and gig economy work. The company reported that these groups have different record-keeping practices, from spreadsheets and paper receipts to early adopters of digital bookkeeping, and that the move toward quarterly submissions highlights variability in readiness for digital reporting.
The company’s announcement also referenced the broader policy objective of Making Tax Digital to modernise record keeping and reduce tax errors by encouraging online maintenance of financial records. The April 2026 stage applies specifically to Income Tax for taxpayers above the stated income threshold. The rollout timeline indicates an expanded scope in April 2027 when the lower threshold is scheduled to take effect.
The company regards the 100,000-download figure as a milestone reached ahead of the latest MTD rollout and as evidence of growing demand for digital tax management tools during a period of regulatory change affecting UK taxpayers.
