In its eighth edition, the Prix Versailles 2022 awards honored the best achievements in contemporary architecture. A total of 24 projects from different parts of the world were displayed as a tribute to creativity, innovation, and reflection of local heritage, eco-efficiency, and the values of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was aligned with the principles of intelligent sustainability, considering the ecological, social, and cultural impacts surrounding the projects.

It goes without saying that architecture is an inherently creative profession since it revolves around sustainability and social and cultural values. Architecture is often conceived as an elusive hybrid of the art engineering, shrouded in mystery to the people it affects daily. By displaying the best architecture to the world each year, Prix Versailles helps recast architecture as a highly accessible profession.

Since its inception in 2015, Prix Versailles has been organizing award ceremonies at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and honors various forms of architecture. It has fueled a fundamental shift from hotels and restaurants to shopping centers, campuses, stations, and sports categories. By 2020, Prix Versailles had added airports to the list as well.

Prix Versailles honors the most outstanding constructions in terms of both interior and exterior architecture. Since the Prix is connected with Versailles, it seeks to make the world-renowned emblem of beauty and elegance not as a model but as an incentive for commercial architecture presently and in the future.

At the very core, Prix Versailles has always sought to connect and celebrate architects from all over the world. It is a unique initiative to improve the link between the economy and culture. It emphasizes the role that economic players in all sectors may play in embellishing and improving living surroundings.

On September 30, 2022, the jury for the 8th Prix Versailles revealed the projects competing for the final rewards, which were to be given at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris at the end of the year. That included six airports, six university campuses, six passenger terminals, and six significant sports facilities throughout the world.

The 8th edition of the Prix Versailles emphasized the need for sustainable development that considers all aspects of the human environment. Indeed, the Prix Versailles is responsible for honoring architectural research resulting in unique designs and individuals who deserve recognition for their inventions’ visual and functional impact on people who can perceive and enjoy them.

The Prix Versailles World Judges Panel had the honor of shedding light on the greatest in modern architecture once again at the crossroads of several disciplines. In 2022, it was headed by philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky, adding personalities from multiple disciplines with the likes of architects Thom Mayne, Lu Wenyu, Thomas Vonier, Jasper Morrison, disc-jockey Charlotte de Witte, film director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, and mountaineer Samina Baig.
The laureates come from all regions of the world identified as follows: Africa and West Asia, Central America, the South and the Caribbean, North America, Central and Northeast Asia, South Asia and the Pacific, Europe.

Architecture is essential evidence of human life. At its most fundamental, architecture exists to construct the physical environment in which people live. It is a component of culture, reflecting how one perceives the world around them. Although architecture is concerned with the physical environment, it mirrors not just culture and society but also human behaviors and other philosophical ideas about existence. It may recognize the rise and fall of numerous towns and civilizations, illustrating changes in human life throughout recorded history.

With architecture being so important in many aspects, it becomes an utmost necessity to recognize the best achievements in contemporary architecture. Prix Versailles has been paying tribute to architecture for years by recognizing its creativity, innovation, and reflection of local heritage. The winning achievements are acknowledged for their extraordinary architecture and design, emphasizing architecture as a matter of human existence and speaking of the culture.
