Explora Books Presents Sanctuary
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 20th Oct 2025 – Explora Books Ltd. presents Sanctuary, a new novel by Karen East, on display at Hall 5.1 D59 during the Frankfurter Buchmesse (October 15-19, 2025). The presentation highlights the novel’s examination of corporate power, environmental decline, tightened security measures, and the search for alternative ways of living.
Set in the mid-twenty-first century, Sanctuary follows Janet Ryan, a thirty-year-old reporter at the Minneapolis Herald. In a nation where major corporations exert decisive influence over government, environmental protections erode and travel outside local neighborhoods becomes suspect, Janet discovers a circle of people skeptical of official narratives. An unauthorized journey to northern Wisconsin brings Janet to an Ojibwe reservation where residents maintain traditional practices and communal survival.
Author Background And Insight
Karen East writes from a background in marriage and family therapy and long experience working with several Midwest tribes. That experience informs the novel’s portrayal of ceremony, kinship, and practical strategies for sustaining community in an unhealthy environment. East is the mother of two children, grandmother to a grandson, and a great-grandmother to four great-grandchildren.
Critical response highlights the book’s timely perspective and cultural insight. “I enjoyed reading Sanctuary by Karen East. I’ve known her for a number of years and knew she was working on this. I was somewhat surprised, as I heard the book. I assumed it would be from the past and some present things. However, it went into the future (about 40 years from the modern day), and it is ironic how it affects the happenings occurring with COVID-19. In the larger cities and the precautions they have to have, just for basic survival.
Cultural Preservation And Survival
And yet, in our Tribal Communities, with returning to the Traditional ways… how we have been able to survive in an unhealthy world. A huge lesson here to all to learn about the Indian/Native American ways.” “Sanctuary takes us through polluted haze to ceremonial smoke guided by the spirit of the Anishinaabe. Karen East’s background in the humanities of our two cultures and her ties to the Ojibway weave this story of desperation, hope and survival.”
Frankfurter Buchmesse is a defining fair for print and digital content, bringing publishers, authors, agents, journalists and cultural professionals together to discover new titles and discuss ongoing challenges in publishing. Sanctuary contributes to conversations about cultural preservation and societal resilience.
