Scientology Spain Marks 45 Years of Service
Scientology celebrates 45 years in Spain, promoting human rights, education, and religious freedom through nationwide programs and its MEJORA foundation.
Madrid, September 18, 2025 – Scientologists celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Church of Scientology’s first legal incorporation in Spain. This milestone honors nearly 50 years of spiritual work, cultural contributions, and humanitarian efforts, highlighting the Church’s lasting impact on Spanish society.
Early Scientology in Spain
Scientology’s history in Spain goes back more than seventy years when L. Ron Hubbard first visited the country. In 1953, he traveled through Sitges, Sevilla, and the Canary Islands, sharing ideas and laying spiritual foundations that grew into a global movement.
By 1967, Hubbard created the Sea Organization to expand Scientology worldwide. Ships like the Enchanter and Apollo helped Spain become a center for cultural exchange. Cities including Las Palmas, Valencia, Cádiz, Ibiza, and Tenerife hosted music, cultural activities, and goodwill events, establishing early roots for today’s Church of Scientology in Spain.
Legal Recognition and National Expansion
A key milestone came in 1980 when the Church formally incorporated in Spain as the Civil Association of Dianetics. This legal recognition allowed Scientology to grow and serve both members and society.
In September 2004, the National Church of Scientology opened in central Madrid, near the Spanish Parliament. Over 6,000 people attended, including civic leaders and cultural figures. Ecclesiastical leader David Miscavige praised Spain’s commitment to freedom and truth, a message still celebrated today.
Renovation and Expanded Headquarters

Narconon centers provide rehabilitation for those struggling with substance abuse, using Hubbard’s methods to support recovery and reintegration. These efforts show the Church’s commitment to practical social impact throughout Spain.
Education, Ethics, and Human Rights
Education is a core focus of Scientology programs. Applied Scholastics improves literacy and study skills, while El Camino a la Felicidad (The Way to Happiness) promotes ethical values in schools, community centers, and correctional facilities.
Through Unidos por los Derechos Humanos (United for Human Rights), the Church sponsors workshops and campaigns teaching the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, fostering tolerance, understanding, and reduced social conflict.
