Scott Asner Encourages Property Owners to Prepare for Late-Summer Storms with Practical Safety Measures
As severe weather happens increasingly frequently in late summer, Scott Asner, one of the Kansas City, MO, real estate investment managers, provides advice to assist residents and renters in preparation for the storms and resilience of the community.
Real Estate Leadership Promotes Preparation
With the summer season comes a heightened threat of severe storms, Scott Asner, Founding Principal of real estate and private equity investment firm Eighteen Capital Group, is urging property owners and landlords to take emergency planning and storm preparedness as a top priority throughout their communities.
The Risks of Severe Weather Events
Late-summer storms have the potential to cause flooding, wind damage, and power loss, particularly in areas of aging infrastructure or inadequate drainage systems. Asner emphasizes the need for ahead-of-time preparation to reduce disruption and assist in keeping buildings and residents safe.
Importance of Planning Ahead
“Preparation for severe weather keeps everyone safe and at ease,” according to Scott Asner. “Preparation ahead of time allows property owners to prevent costly damage and inform tenants of what they can anticipate.”
Five Pragmatic Steps Toward Storm Readiness
Asner provides five pragmatic steps to assist both renters and property owners during the height of storm season:
- Update Emergency Plans – Replace or update evacuation plans, contact numbers, and shelter areas. Make sure that plans are readable and communicated to residents.
- Check Roofing and Drainage – Clear gutters and storm drains routinely. Inspect roofs and window weatherstrip for leaks to keep water from entering.
- Secure Outdoor Objects – Bring furniture, grills, and signs inside or tie them down so they don’t become projectiles in strong winds.
- Test Backup Systems – Inspect emergency lighting and generators if available. Ensure that residents know what systems will be up during a power failure.
- Communicate Early and Often – Provide weather reports, building policies, and recovery messages by way of email, text messages, or signs in public places.
Responsible Property Management During Storms
“Storm preparedness is good property management,” Asner said. “A well-thought-out plan makes a real difference when weather conditions are rapidly changing.”
Resources for Property Owners and Residents
Property owners and residents who need more resources can go to Ready.gov or reach out to local emergency management offices for community-specific information.
