Workday vice president and UKI country manager Daniel Pell was quoted by the Evening Standard recently as saying:

Hutton’s Hardline Counter to Human-Centric Business Models
It’s a view widely shared by business leaders. But others, including Hutton, are fighting back.
In his hardline response, Hutton, ever modestly described as a sort-of ‘cult leader’ in his own sphere of commerce, threw caution to the wind: “My way is possibly the opposite of that in the sense of being like, in fact, f*ck the people.”. Where AI stands today and where it is going to stand in six months, I believe you could double up the staff that you have now and you could get five, 10 times the work out of them and never need to hire another person.
Reorganizing Processes Rather than Additional Staff
Whereas Pell believes that individuals will always be more important than machines, Hutton’s experience with service-led small firms tells a different tale. According to him, most companies are employing workers as stopgap measures, not to achieve growth.
“For the three, five, or 15 staff member small business owner today, it’s all about enabling those blokes to compete with big companies and making them realize that really, the only reason you employ people is so that they make you money,” said Hutton bluntly.
If they’re not generating you profit, they’ve got to go, and we’ve got to substitute them with something else. It’s all about being profitable.”
Workplace Productivity Data Supports Hutton’s View
This philosophy has some basis in office statistics. Research conducted by Voucher Cloud discovered the typical office employee is productive for just 2 hours and 53 minutes per day – but UK business leaders are facing increasing tax and pay burdens, especially after April’s National Living Wage hikes and continued employer NIC contributions.
Increased Costs Drive SMEs Towards AI and Automation
“Today’s rise from a tax perspective is putting pressure on small businesses to have staff in the way of having employees has never been more expensive. It’s a chance to scorch everything to ashes and rebuild something back up the right way that’s more efficient and more profitable.”

Whereas concerns around AI replacing human employees still exist, Hutton thinks the actual concern should be not implementing AI. He contends that models which are old are debilitating small firms, and the time to change is now.

“In the financial period we’re currently in, we have to be very mindful of the results and the expenditures that we’ve got as business individuals.”.
“Ultimately, it’s getting more and more difficult for companies to make a profit. I’m an advocate of small business. All the taxation that is pouring in is making it even more challenging for those individuals to keep things afloat.”.
“Ironically enough, AI is beginning to displace much of the things that some of those individuals would have been doing… So, by raising the taxes, you’re making a business go, “f*ck it,” like I’m suggesting, lay off all of your people.”.
If we get the right things in place, we can do that with fewer people. We can be more profitable. We can be leaner. We can be more agile. We can outmarket and outmanoeuvre the largest corporations.”
AI Adoption Rates Show a Clear Shift
This view corresponds to existing trends in business adoption. A Salesforce study in 2024 found that 92% of British businesses are currently adopting or intending to adopt generative AI. BT is going to eliminate 55,000 positions by 2030 and automate many of these jobs using tools such as CRM systems to consolidate customer information and automate sales, marketing, and support functions.

Aside from this, the World Economic Forum has recently forecasted a 78 million job shift globally by the year 2030, where positions like data entry clerks, bank tellers, and administrative workers are all projected to be decreasing. Conversely, AI and data-based roles are on the rise.
