Puntland First Policy Institute Takes Pride in welcoming a Cathartic Movement for Self-Determination and Development 

Garowe, Puntland, Somalia, 11th May 2024 – The rise of “Puntland first” is one of the grassroots movements in history, powerfully asserting its ideology of development and self-determination. This movement not only took a single political event to begin and then to catch fire but multiple of such political events were there to cause this movement. Economic development and political stability within the Puntland were the leading hub of this movement. It was also the young generation that elicited the movement strongly. Also, their belief in building Puntland from within made the basis for the movement. If the catalyst for the rise of “Puntland First” is to be chart down, then the intervention of the Federal government of Somalia in highly successful Puntland local elections is found at the first. It was the first sparkle in this political fire. With going down on the chart following events impel the movement: Firstly, after the intervention of FGS in highly powerful Puntland local elections and the blockage of Puntland shares in international donor funds (Humanitarian aid contributions, 2024), it was the constitutional change that was imposed on Somalia without involving Puntland authorities. Upholding the ideology of Puntland First, advocates delineate that for the stability of the whole Somalia Puntland development should be prioritized. In addition, it was also explained that a stable and developed Puntland is not only beneficial for itself but also for Somalia as a whole. Therefore, the advocates declare that economic development is key to unlocking Puntlanders’ potential. Aside from these powerful points, Puntland’s first movement was also characterized by the grassroots nature and the determination of young Puntlanders, who use social media platforms to organize, mobilize, and raise their voices. Taking advantage of effective campaigns and discussions, as well as physical meetups, the movement is gaining momentum and solitary support. The public’s minds were cultivated, in this way, in order to make an overall conducive environment.
