Pie Tax Hits 100,000 Downloads as More Taxpayers Prepare for Making Tax Digital

Press Release Reseller Program

Pie Tax, the UK-based tax management app, has confirmed it surpassed 100,000 downloads in 2026. The company reached this milestone before the first phase of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax came into effect in April 2026. It says continued interest in the app reflects a wider move towards digital tax management as more taxpayers prepare for new reporting requirements.

The company points to the figure as one indicator of rising demand for digital tax tools during a period of regulatory change – not a projection of future growth.

From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with gross income above £50,000 have been required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. That threshold falls to £30,000 in April 2027, bringing a bigger pool of taxpayers into scope.

Quarterly updates don’t remove year-end obligations. Taxpayers affected by MTD must still file a Final Declaration annually, on top of four quarterly reports. That’s five HMRC touchpoints where there used to be one, putting greater pressure on record-keeping software to stay current throughout the year rather than at deadline time.

Tom McNally, founder of Pie Tax, said:

“We’re seeing a real shift in how people handle their taxes. Historically, a lot of taxpayers only thought about it once a year – Making Tax Digital is changing that, pushing people toward keeping accurate records throughout the year instead. “Passing 100,000 downloads tells us people are actively looking for a simpler way to keep their tax records organised and stay on top of the new reporting requirements, rather than scrambling before a deadline.”

Pie Tax’s user base spans sole traders, micro-business owners, landlords, and people managing multiple income streams – from gig work to online selling.

Record-keeping readiness across that group varies widely, from digital-first users to those still working from spreadsheets and paper receipts. The shift to quarterly submissions has thrown that uneven preparedness into sharp relief.

The broader aim of Making Tax Digital is to modernise financial record-keeping and reduce filing errors by moving the process online. The April 2026 stage targets Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for those above the £50,000 threshold, with scope widening again in April 2027.

Although Pie Tax reached 100,000 downloads before Making Tax Digital for Income Tax was introduced, the company says it’s continuing to see strong interest from people looking for an easier way to manage their tax records as the new rules are rolled out.
